About this deal

Gaming isn’t a priority for the AOC I1601FWUX. It offers a standard 60Hz refresh rate and doesn’t support adaptive sync. Still, it works well enough in a pinch. The quality of the folding stand is more than a little frustrating, especially when there are so many better examples on the market as covers for iPads and other tablets. It's hard to overlook the poor execution of such a vital element of the product. The monitor also has what AOC calls LowBlue Mode, which adjusts color temperatures on the display to reduce blue light. Certain wavelengths of blue light that are commonly produced by monitors and other glowing displays have been linked to eyestrain, insomnia and even age-related macular degeneration. Automatic color tweaks seem like a simple way to avoid some of this potential damage.

The I1601FWUX disappoints in color accuracy, too, with a much higher color error than most monitors we’ve recently tested. I noticed that colors which should appear punchy and impactful instead shifted towards a more pastel look. This issue is most common when you have been adjusting your display settings. Thankfully, you can reset them pretty easily. Usually the monitor will reset in a few seconds, but if it doesn’t, you can restart your computer and see if that helps. It’s great value for money for workers who need something they can sling into their bag at a moment’s notice. Just make sure you’ve invested in a laptop bag with plenty of padding. Verdict

A brilliant little portable monitor for the hybrid worker

With a response time of 5ms, things are generally as smooth as you’d need them to be and video is easy on the eyes. The display has a couple of interesting features, including the ability to rotate 90 degrees with automatic pivoting. There's no need to adjust the screen orientation or tweak your display settings. Just set up the display on its side, and you get a portable screen with a vertical orientation. For these reasons, you won’t want to use the I1601FWUX for any heavy photo or video editing. But, assuming you’re working with a laptop that’s powerful enough to competently handle something like Adobe Premiere Pro anyway, your device will (hopefully) come with a decent screen. Once you have the right drivers installed, you’re done. Just plug it in and it will shimmer into life, with a big AOC logo glowing proudly. Typically, the I1601FWUX takes about 3-5 seconds to power up, so not long at all. It’s also easy to shift around on your desk – if you need to feng shui things to make way for a steaming mug of coffee, or to make room for your cat that just leapt up to try to ‘help’ with your review.

The illumination looks even and when a 256 shade gradient was applied for testing, the display looked relatively even with only a few areas that you could tell there was a transition. As far as viewing angles, the picture can get a little dim when not viewed straight on, but you can still get a good idea of what you are looking at on the screen, regardless of which angle you might be viewing it from. Some might have problems with a screen that has a response time of 5ms, but in my daily use which included writing, YouTube, and some light movie watching through Netflix, this wasn't an issue. Despite it not being plug and play on the Windows 10 units I tried, the I1601FWUX worked instantly when plugged into a Mac. It didn't require any drivers and it just powered up and started showing an image in less than five seconds. It felt kind of weird having a secondary display, but using it for a few days, it made sense. It hasn't been a necessary part of my arsenal, but having a press release on one screen and the writing area on another or similar setup, proved very useful. Sometimes a resolution issue will result in no signal for your AOC monitor. If your PC’s graphics card is set to display a resolution that your monitor cannot, you may get an “AOC monitor no signal” message.

We have no complaints about the performance of I1601P’s 15.6-inch full-HD IPS display. It’s crisp, responsive and easy on the eye. The firm also includes software for your PC (e-Saver) that will allow you to control the power management and a desktop screen splitting tool. The additional software can be found on the physical disc that is included in the box. The disc also has the user guide and monitor driver. Conclusion Overdrive is set to ‘off’ as standard, and for much of the time you’ll probably want to leave it that way. Ghosting – that unsightly blur caused by fast-moving objects on digital displays – was very noticeable on this video , but we found that bumping up the I1601FWUX to its medium overdrive setting mitigated this.
